Questions and Answers (commonly asked)
Q: What is the first thing I have to do to get married?
A: Your first step in getting married is to fill out the “Notice of Intended Marriage”, no less than one month and one day before the ceremony and no more than 18 months before it. The notice has to be signed by both parties and lodged with me within the stated time frame. I also sign the NIM after sighting your relevant legal papers. The document costs $150 to lodge with me and is part of the Celebrant’s fees.
Q: Which Government department do I have to contact for permission to marry?
A: You don’t have to contact any department as your Celebrant handles all the legal requirements before, during and after the wedding ceremony.
Q: What is going to be in my ceremony and can we contribute to its contents?
A: I will put together a personalized ceremony after meeting with the Bride and Groom and finding out their wishes and expectations. You can contribute as much or as little as you like to the ceremony—you can write your own vows, do a reading together or to each other. I can include a choice of Rites of Passage Ceremonies into your ceremony, at no extra cost to you.
Q: Can I have the wedding in any place I like?
A: Yes, you can, although you will need to get in touch with your local council for permission and to ascertain their requirements. Most councils charge a fee to utilise the beach or park.
Q: Can I have family, friends or children involved in the wedding ceremony?
A: Yes you can—they can be ring bearers, do a reading or recite a poem, sing a song, play a
music piece or contribute in some other way.
Q: What other services do I provide as a Celebrant?
A: I perform Baby Namings, Re-newal of Vows and Commitment Ceremonies as well as provide Funeral Services. Other ceremonies include 18th and 21st Birthdays, Graduation, House Warming, and boat namings are available on request.
